I am so ready for today's topic, it's probably one of my favorite things to talk about. I know it's not a lot of other people's. But for me, websites are the foundation for any and every business. I don't care what kind of industry you're in your website is a huge part of your foundation, especially if you do any kind of marketing. So I'm quite excited. And I'm going to do my best to pack all this in into a bite sized digestible episode. But I hope you're ready to listen to this. And you may decide you want to listen to this episode again, I'm going to also share with you a really useful tool that's called a website grader. And I will have it in the show notes where you can actually run a report on your own website. So let's start off with I've already mentioned, my belief. And it comes from a lot of experience and a lot of expertise is that a website is a huge part of your foundation. So I'm not even going to talk about whether you should or shouldn't have a website because I 100% believe you should have a website, especially as a wedding professional. Now I'm going to have other episodes where I talk about online reputation. And I talk about social media, all this, but I'm here to tell you PR get prepared for what I'm going to share with you. This is one of those instances where I wish this was not the case, your business is actually judged by the look of your website. Do you want me to repeat that? I'll be happy to your website. Is that important? Now let's just think for a minute. You're a wedding professional. You spend a lot of money setting up at wedding shows, you run ads on social media, maybe you run Google ads, you get out network with people or you network over the internet. And you're losing out on business because when they go to your website, they don't take action. Why don't they take action? Well, there could be many cases. But your website is pivotal with the return on your investment for marketing. Okay, I told you I'm excited about this episode. Okay, so let's start from the beginning. First of all, when I meet one on one with a client, one of the very first things I asked them, What do you want your website to do for you? Do you want it to bring in sales? Do you want it to provide you leads? Do you just want people to be able to go there and research about you? What do you want that website to do for your business? Now, for most wedding professionals, the majority will answer and say I want leads. I want people to book me For their upcoming events, very good answer. And your website can do just that. But it has to have certain elements. They're pivotal, there's no way around it. There is not an option to have a website that does not work on mobile, because I'm here to tell you that 75 to 80%. Think about that seven or eight out of 10 people are going to your website, from their mobile devices, your website can look fantastic on desktop. But if it sucks on mobile, they have X doubt, and they are marking you off their list, they're not going to go to a desktop and pull you up. This is a harsh reality for a lot of business owners. You've got the backdrops, you've got the marketing material, the handout at the wedding show, you've got your booth all set up, you've bought all this stuff, to have this great booth, you know, your speech, you know, your sales pitch, you're meeting these couples and wedding shows. They like you. They go to the internet to research you and they end up on your website. When's the last time you updated your website? Be honest, if it's not in the last six months to a year, your website is outdated. I'm being honest with you. If you know anything about me, or if you don't know anything about me, you're getting ready to find out I don't come built with a filter. I love making an impact for businesses by using marketing.
But we can't do that. If we bs around, we have to cut to the chase. We have to be upfront and honest. Because at the end of the day, whatever marketing you do, it's going to funnel to your website. I wish there was a way around it, but there's not. So let's get down to the nuts and bolts of this episode. Let's talk about elements. So you already heard me dish out the look. Websites right now are clean. Not a lot going on. Not a lot of busy patterns and all this kind of stuff. Now that was the case. I don't know exactly how long ago, but clean, very easy to read the information that's there. And when I talk about that, I want to talk about two things. Number one, some people will never leave your homepage. Now why would that be important? Well, if the best part of you is on the about page, and that's three or four pages down in your navigation, they're never going to see it. And that might be what you're banking on selling them. I'm going to sell them on how long I've been doing this, how great I am, how unique I am. What if they don't get to that page? It's happening right now. your homepage is critical. So let's talk about that homepage. I encourage you to have on there. spell it out. Here's what my business offers. Here's why I'm unique. And here's my call to action. What's a call to action? Some people call it a CTA. What do you want them to do? They're there. They're interested in you. They got a wedding coming up. What do you want them to do? You want them to call you. You want them to send you an email. Make it easy on your visitors. Don't give them a hoop to jump through. Because I've got news for you. They're not going to jump through the hoop because there's somebody else out there making it easier. They might not be the best wedding professional. But my goodness, they've put a lot of time and energy in their website or they've had a professional do it. And it's a website built to perform meaning it is a lead generator. It's a sales machine. And that's exactly what your website should be doing for you. homepage. I just mentioned, your bit what your business offers. Why are you unique, and your calls to action. Now there is some core content that I would like to mention. You definitely want to review your content, please, oh, please do not just update your website and copy the information from the website you've had for the last five or 10 years and put it on a new website. You have to spend the time updating the content. people's attention spans are not what it used to be. They want to get in, they want to research about a place or they want to see some pictures or read some testimonials. How in the world? Do I contact them? What's my next step? Okay, so talking about core content, yes, good contents important. But for wedding professionals, testimonials and reviews, engaged couples love to read, they love even more to watch a video testimonial. They love to read other people's experiences, reviews sometimes will sell your business for you. But if they're not updated, and they're not on your website, they can't do the work for you. Now, stay with
me here, because this is really important stuff that we're getting into, you have to have an easy to navigate website, we no longer need 15 or 25 pages on a website. Now you have an e commerce website, that's a whole different story. I'm talking about the nuts and bolts with your website, you need to have a clean navigation, probably somewhere in the ballpark of four to maybe six or seven pages. Again, it depends on your specific business, but clean, not overwhelming. They can get in get some information, they're ready to talk to you, you've got them on the line, you've got to give them an easy way to contact you. Now, a lot of times, I recommend two different things, I recommend a contact form. Don't make them copy your email address from your website, go out of your website and paste your email address into an email platform just don't do it, at least have a contact form. They can click put their information in, it should email you and then you reach out to them. Do they want an email back? Do they want a phone call? Do they want to set up a meeting, make it simple for them. The other thing I recommend is a lot of times now you can turn on messaging where you have a little chat box at the bottom of your website or somewhere on your website. It just depends on how you can handle those inquiries and those questions. So your contact information being updated and being easy for them to get to your social media links. Give them ways to connect with you. Let them get to know you through social media. Now, there's a whole nother episode on what content you put on social media. But if you're on Facebook, Instagram, LinkedIn, Pinterest, tik tok, wherever you are for your business, make sure you have those links on your website. Now, as I'm wrapping this up, I have a couple more topics that are really important. First of all, I'm going to talk about performance. Your website needs to load in a timely fashion, someone's not sitting there for 30 seconds and saying I'm just gonna sit here and wait for this website to load. newsflash, they have closed out and they are looking up your competitor. I'm sorry, it's the truth. Also, it has to be mobile friendly. I've already mentioned that before. But that's part of its performance, you need to look at your own website, on a mobile phone on a smartphone, you need to look at your website on a tablet, you also need to look at your website, on a desktop or laptop.
You need to know how your business looks out there on all the different devices. Don't wait for somebody to call and say, I'm on your website on my phone, and half of your contact information is cut off. Don't do it because I'm here to tell you nine times out of 10 they're not picking up the phone and calling you. They're just not doing it. They're focused on themselves. They're focused on planning their wedding or event. Don't leave your leads and your sales to chance by not putting your best foot forward. You should want to shout from the rooftops. Hey, I'm ABC company and go visit my website. Because you know wholeheartedly everything they need to know about you is on that website. Now I know you could be thinking about well don't listen my prices. I'm not saying you have to list your prices on there. But at least maybe your packages or what your services include. Give yourself a fighting chance. really evaluate your website and say this is as great as the booth I set up at a wedding Show. I'm so proud of this website. This really sells me. This is my best foot forward. So performance is really important across all day. different devices. Now, last but not least, I will say a tidbit about domain and website hosting. Over the past couple years, I have heard from people that are paying astronomical fees for their domain hosting in their website hosting. Without getting into a bunch of specifics, I'm just going to leave this here. In all honesty, you really should not be paying over $20 a year for your domain whatever.com, whatever dotnet. Now, if you use some specialty domains, of course, they can be higher 30s 40s 50s that depends. But I have seen some companies out there take advantage of businesses in regards to how much their domains and hosting cost. domains normally are a yearly charge, your website hosting, this would be two or three episodes in one. Get yourself educated on what you're paying for with your hosting. In the day and age we're in, you should have some kind of SSL security certificate attached to your website. Most of the time, it comes with hosting now, just make sure you take the time to find out what you're paying for most website hosting, whether it be WordPress, a builder, most of the time, that is not over 20 to $25 a month for the hosting. Now if you have a website company out there that you work with, and they have maintenance involved, they have edits involved every month and your hosting and your domain. That's a different story. I'm just talking about your basic domain and hosting charges I never like to see people get taken advantage of. So just take the time to educate yourself. You can't just let them sit for months and years at a time with no changes. They have to have the appropriate content and calls to action to get people to contact you to reach out to you about your services or product.
